Training
To give a short course so that at the end of the course, it is expected that participants will be able: 1. To understand the use of epidemiologic methods in clinical research and clinical practice 2. Be able to formulate theoretical, data collection, and data analysis designs relevant in clinical research and clinical practice 3. Be able to conduct sound clinical epidemiologic studies

The course took place 3 days (8 am to 4 pm) at Lab. Komputer Gedung RSP UNPAD. On this event, CCR-ARI worked with staffs from Department of Clinical Epidemiology that involved as Resource Person and facilitators. Total 32 persons participated in the course-from the target 25 persons- which 8 from affiliates (UNRAM, UNPATTI, UNSYIAH, UNLAM). Workshop Instructors included lecturers from Clinical Epidemiology, Public Health and Internal Medicine with extensive experience in research design particularly RCT, Cohort, Case control, and cross sectional. On the first day, participants were provided with general overview of research in clinical epidemiology and given motivation in pursuing research within the field. On the second and third day, the course focused on planning research using several designs: RCT, cohort, case-control, and cross sectional. Afternoon sessions were filled with group simulations, using deck cards to simulate different research designs. These sessions included 5-6 participants in each group and facilitated by one person from FMUP Clinical Epidemiology Department.
The aim of the course was to increase comprehension of participants on designing research in clinical epidemiology, specifically cohort, case-control, RCT, and cross sectional in clinical epidemiology. We used a pre-test/post-test method to evaluate understanding of the materials. In the beginning of the course, participant's understanding on research varied from minimum experience to multiple publications. So they had different expectations about the course. However we explained that the sessions are introductory to intermediate level, as for advance courses will be conducted in the future. Most participants have a research question in mind, and these topics became discussions throughout the course in how to plan the design. Participants showed their enthusiast on the course. Some used break time to continue consultation with facilitators. We also found that the afternoon simulation sessions were very important to increase understanding on the research design and was a good opportunity to share technical difficulties in implementing the designs. Overall we recieved positive feedback, and participants were interested for other courses' topic related to Clinical Epidemiology, especially statistic toolbox and sampling techniques.
Several participants, especially from UNPAD, skipped some classes to do other agendas in the university and teaching hospitals. In the beginning there were 33 participants, but throughout the course we ended up with 25 participants who received the certificate.
A) make clear the objective of the course, since some participants were expecting advance subjects on clinical epidemiology, such as statistical analysis b) conducting the course in the university has its advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is its more feasible for lecturers, the disadvantage is participants coming from the university will sometime skip courses for other activities in the teaching hospital (such as meetings etc. ) c) provide materials for the courses in advance so participants are able to go through materials before the course starts. d) The simulation/hands-on session was beneficial because it triggered active discussions from all participants and made clear technical confusions about the research design. e) use a room with a better layout. In the beginning we opted to use the computer lab, however due to limited number of computers available we ended up not using the computers. So the room was not comfortable enough to facilitate learning.

Participants started the course with a wide range of understanding on research design. In the course, participants were able to discuss misconceptions about research design and analysis of the results.
